WOW says: Stop talking, start planting!

That’s the motto of our Rhino Watch Safari Lodge in Kenya. In July 2011 we sponsored the first ‘Plant-for-the-Planet Academy Workshop’ at our property where founder of the organization ‘Plant for the Planet’ Felix Finkbeiner together with our daughter Maisha Wirth and 500 local school children planted hundreds of trees to compensate for our CO2 emissions.

Maisha also became ambassador for climate justice in Kenya and official representative of ‘Plant for the Planet’. The academy workshop was held in the church of our neighboring village Mweiga. Among the audience were high- ranking UN Environment representatives and the Kenyan Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Hon Dr Noah Wekesa. Musician Ayub Ogada was responsible for the music during the academy. His song “Kothbiro”, which means “It will rain” in the Luo language and was used in the movie ‘The Constant Gardener’, brought the entire
audience to a still silence.

In 2012 Maisha will host several workshops for school children from the Mount Kenya region. The goal is to plant an additional 100,000 trees in Kenya. More important however is to educate the children on how to take care of and protect the trees.

The Rhino Watch Safari Lodge was constructed with sustainability being our main priority. Our employees are local people and we continue to generate new jobs. Waste water produced from the sinks and showers are routed directly to a recycled water system to be used for the irrigation of our gardens. Waste water from the toilets is organically recycled in two septic tanks and then routed into a tree plantation. Garbage is separated and sent to recycling facilities. Organic waste is composted or used by local farmers as animal feed. Furthermore, for every liter of fuel that is spent locally or in our other international programs we plant trees at our Rhino watch property.

We are looking forward to welcome you at the Rhino Watch Safari Lodge. All our guests are welcome to plant a tree and to help the children with their project.
